It’s 2:47am and I’ve just finished reading Wonderstruck. I couldn’t put it down. I had to read it all in one sitting. To hell with work the next day! I fell in love with Selznick’s debut novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, #1 New York Times children’s bestseller and winner of the 2008 Caldecott Medal among countless other awards. The 3D movie, Hugo Cabret, is due for release in 2012. I didn’t think it would be possible to produce something better, but this book captured me from the very first page.

The simplicity of the dialogue and uncomplicated style belies a complex criss-crossing web of emotions and unresolved conflict, exploring themes of struggle with identity, the meaning of family, modern attitude to marriage and children, friendship and loneliness and courage. So many aspects of human existence are touched upon in this book! It’s like an encyclopaedia, a reference book, available for children and their parents to explore together. A book of gifts.

As with the first book, the drawings are spellbinding and tell great chunks of story just by themselves. Selznick is so clever in his ability to show a reader how to be an interpreter of visual imagery not just a reader of words. And this seemed particularly apt as the story centres around two main protagonists who are both deaf, for whom visuals are everything. I liked that juxtaposition. The grainy, black and white illustrations of this 460 page volume draw us in, mute, but with astonishing storytelling power.

The two stories involve Ben, a young boy recently orphaned, who sets out to find his father and Rose, a young girl whose mother was a famous actress and had little time for her daughter. These two characters are separated by time and also modality. Ben’s story is told in words, Rose’s in pictures. Eventually we find Rose is actually Ben’s grandmother and they meet in the present day. Ben follows a trail of clues to the city’s museum where he meets a young boy, Jamie. Homeless, Ben stays hidden in the museum for days. But it’s in those days that he gradually uncovers a secret. Like unfolding layers of silk around a treasure, Ben realises the mysterious man from this very museum, Daniel, whose portrait is inside his mother’s locket, came to his home town by the lake to do research. And fell in love with Ben’s mother. But just as Ben makes this amazing discovery he realises that his legendary father died. I had held my breath, hoping for the best outcome, but no. It was devastating to me, as reader, that Ben be denied his father, after longing to meet him his whole life! But with childlike acceptance, Ben keeps searching, following the clues, until he makes a delightful discovery which brought tears to my eyes – his grandmother Rose. A new chapter begins in Ben’s life. A sense of belonging, an intimate family connection, a place.

Perhaps more than anything, this book does not seek to shield children from an uncomfortable truth – that life sometimes contains sadness and regret, that we do not have control over these things and that other joys may await us if we have an open heart and an inquiring mind. The delights of the old exhibits in the museum, the beautifully crafted cabinet, the ‘Wonderstruck’ in which his father displayed fabulous items and many other joys made this book fascinating to me.

It’s nice to think that out there somewhere, despite the loneliness and isolation of our individual journeys, that there is a warm soft place to land. Like a long-lost grandmother.

Christmas is nearly here! I have to say, I'm thankful for the cooler summer we're having so far. Makes it cosy! Anyway, my latest little book, The Anything Shop, is available online at booktopia and buyaustralianbooks. See the links on the right hand side of my blog.

In other news, I recently spent a week in Perth and had a fabulous time at the Art Gallery and museum. There's a wonderful exhibition on at the moment - "Princely Treasures". princely treasures is a collection form the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. European masterpieces 1600-1800, including religious icons, tapestries, paintings, clothing and jewellery, ornamental pieces such as snuff boxes, weaponry and armour. Even an air powered rifle! If you're a fan of Jane Austen, you'd love it!

One of the most stunning pieces of furniture I have ever seen. The inlay work is mind boggling. Back in the days when people took pride and a lot of time to create something of exquisite beauty which endures for centuries.

Dawn Meredith admits to having weird ideas in her head and this little story does have an odd starting point. However, the story is a satisfying one, initiating some interesting and thought-provoking ideas. Ten year-old Charlie is fascinated when he comes across a new shop which seems to have magically appeared, calling itself The Anything Shop, and inviting customers in to swap or buy anything they wish. Could a shop really give Charlie whatever he wanted? He has to find out. Charlie's inquiry seems to have been prearranged as Alfred and Meryl, the shop owners, know exactly why he is there. Charlie swaps those very embarrassing hugs he gets at home for an amazing cricket bat, which is the answer to all his dreams of becoming a champion player at school! It is not long before he realises that 'no hugs at home' cannot be replaced by cricket prowess; but he is locked into the swap for two years. How can he get back to what life was like and why do Alfred and Meryl want to take the joys of childhood away? As Charlie sets out to solve his dilemma, along with Sam his new friend caught up in the same swindle, he comes to an understanding of what is really important. There is plenty of action in this simple, but cleverly told story, and the interspersing of lively black and white drawings add to its accessibility.

Flight Simulator 737 - children's author Dawn Meredith in the cockpit

I had THE MOST FUN the other day - in a flight simulator of a 737. Seriously! It has been designed to emulate an actual plane, in a life sized cockpit, with full control panels and a software program that produces amazing physicality, including 'views' through the cockpit windows of the airport/landscape as you encounter it. I can tell you, the sound of sirens and buzzers add authenticity, especially when a voice insists, "Pull up. Ground approaching!" Sitting on six hydraulics and controlled by a cupboard of CPUs, this machine tosses the occupants around with realism that is truly amazing! FSAP, Flight Simulators Asia Pacific, The company who built this amazing piece of technology (and who supply organisations who train plane and helicopter pilots) are going to make it available to the general public around Christmas time. At $175 a go, with a trained pilot helping you fly, its worth every penny.

Speculative Fiction Writers Festival, Sydney

Had a wonderful time at the festival on Saturday, organised by fantasy writer Kate Forsyth. Pamela Freeman's talk was particularly interesting. Her depth of knowledge and engaging manner were a hit, I think! My panel with three other authors, Paul Garrety, Stuart Daly and Claire Corbett went really well. Lots of laughs and interesting questions. This mad, mad world of spec fic writing isn't for everyone but the community of writers and supporters is brilliant. Jack Heath did a great job chairing the panel. I look forward to the next festival!

The Anything Shop - One Parent's Joy

I've heard from a happy parent today -

Hi Dawn, just wanted to let you know my 6yo daughter has been reading The Anything Shop to her kindy (i.e. prep) class at school, one chapter at a time! They are in thrall. I can't believe she's reading it - she has been avoiding 'chapter books' as they are 'too hard'. Thank you for inspiring my daughter's imagination and giving her reading skills a huge flip.

What is this shop that seems to offer so much to children, but traps them into giving away parts of their life that they miss dreadfully? How to live in a world without hugs? Charlie and his friend Sam eventually see the wicked shopkeepers for the treacherous creatures they are. With courage and determination, they invade that strange Anything Shop, defeat the villains’ nasty little plot and return all the stolen hugs, tickles and other treasures to the children that have been tricked. The book’s print and layout are clear and attractive, the pictures illustrate and clarify the story—this would give confidence to reluctant readers. Lesley Vamos’s deftly drawn characters liven every page. Get lots of copies for the children in your life.

Speculative Fiction Writers Festival, Sydney

Looking forward to a writing festival coming up - The Speculative Fiction Writers Festival, held at the NSW Writers Centre in Rozelle. Some fantastic authors will be there, including, among many others, Kate Forsyth, Richard Harland and Kaaron Warren. A panel on SF in television and film brings together Bruce Carter, Creative Director of Animal Logic, Colin Harvey, writer for Dr Who and Highlander licensed tie-in stories, and Karel Segers, film producer and story analyst. And not just one but two fabulous book launches!

I shall be there also, as a panelist on the topic: "Different Voices, Different Journeys". (My new book, The Anything Shop is my first fantasy story to be published). See you there!

Penrith Library book launch The Anything Shop

What a great day! With jars of pink fog, a real live main character, Charlie, lots of kids, funky finger food, story time, a writing workshop, an illustration demo, a real live Penrith Councillor and more! The Penrith launch of The Anything Shop was thoroughly enjoyable PLUS I got to see people I haven't seen for ages and some new faces too. Thanks to all my helpers: Fluffy, Judi, Andy, Lyndall, Barbara and budding photographer Anna, also Councillor Marco Malkoc and Librarian Ruth Taylor for hosting and presenting.I feel very lucky. I hope you all had a fun!

Had a great time in Canberra at the Conflux Speculative Fiction convention. The Boundaries in YA Fiction & Steampunk discussion panels went well and the launch was a success, thanks to Gillian, Jane and Tycho. Thanks guys! A big thank you also to event organiser and superwoman Karen Herkes for fitting me into the program at the last minute. Thoroughly enjoyed all the panels and workshops I attended, especially Nicole Murphy's novel plotting workshop. Brilliant!

Conflux Speculative Fiction Convention - Canberra 2011

Arrived in Canberra for the Conflux Speculative Fiction convention today after a hairy drive from Sydney with blustery winds and sheets of rain across the windscreen making visibility difficult. But here I am! Looking forward to all the workshops on various topics and to be on two panels - 'Boundaries in YA Fiction' and 'Steampunk'. Yay! Adelaide writers, teachers professional development talk with author Dawn Meredith

I had SUCH a great time in Adelaide. Thanks so much to all those wonderful people who made it so easy for me, taking me everywhere, having coffees, dinners and chats. The May Gibbs Children's Literature Trust does a fantastic and generous thing encouraging writers and illustrators such as myself by providing a lovely apartment for time away. For all the kids at Victor Harbour School, I am pleased to report that I have at last finished FLIGHT!!!!! Now I just have to wait for my publisher to get to me.
Fingers crossed there's not too much revising to do...

Dawn Meredith interviewed by Fran Knight for ReadPlus

Just read the write-up of my interview with Fran Knight in Adelaide a few weeks ago. We met in the fabulous cafe/bookshop Mary Martin's, in Norwood. As the sun streamed through the leadlight windows of the Heritage-listed Baptist church we chatted about books and education, reading and writing. It seems Fran and I are on the same wavelength about quite a few things, but she thinks I am brave in my assertion that there will always be a market for physical books. The touch and feel and smell and joy of holding something printed and bound that you can appreciate and pass on to the next generation will always have a place in my world, at least! I enjoyed meeting Fran immensely. This lady has a wealth of experience and a quiet but confident optimism for the future of literature in this country. Her current project is a literacy and curriculum support book for classroom teachers which lists books and resources by theme. curriculum resource book

Steampunk - What's not to love?

It's taking the world by storm but is by no means a new concept. Steam Punk has been around for decades, with loyal enthusiasts creating marvellous gadgets, costumes and even a house on wheels for conventions, films and get-togethers. Victoriana with a twist, its sort of like an alternative universe based upon the premise: What if steam were still our main source of energy? How would we adapt our lives to use it?
Steam Punk is full of adventure, creativity and a sense of nostalgia for days gone by, with luscious fabrics, ingenious creations in a fledgling industrial age, when people knew the meaning of 'manners', lived in smaller communities and actually talked to each other! (Now I'm getting off the subject and stepping onto one of my soapboxes) My friend Richard Harland has had enormous success with his first two steam punk novels, Worldshaker and Liberator. In Richard's world most human beings live on giant mulit-storied, steam driven juggernauts, roaming the great land masses of Earth.Worldshaker

Beautiful Victor Harbor, Clydesdales and Granite Island

Hi All!

I spent some time in the lovely seaside town of Victor Harbor recently. One of the highlights for me was taking the horse drawn carriage (drawn by Clydesdales) over the causeway to Granite Island. I even got to hold Thomas' reins on the way back! Most mornings the horses are taken for a dip in the ocean before their working day begins and I was lucky enough to catch them.

Real Men READ BOOKS! Role models for boys

I had the priviledge of teaching a writing workshop to a single sex class of year 1 boys last week. I was profoundly impressed by their teacher, the behaviour of those little gentlemen and the philospohy behind this whole venture. Boys learn differently to girls and their response to literacy is likewise different. In this class, which began last year when the group were in kindergarten class, strong self-discipline values are encouraged and even the language used is more boy-friendly. In this age where many boys do not have a father living with them or significant male mentor in their lives, this sort of class has a huge, positive impact. I cannot speak highly enough of the school for having the sense to act upon current research into why boys become despondent with learning and literacy in particular at the critical ages of 6-7 years. As part of this ground breaking venture the teacher interviewed and photographed all the male teachers and other male staff of the school reading their favourite books. Love it!

Hi All!
I have happy news. My new book, The Anything Shop will be released by Wombat Books October 1st. Yay! My fabulous illustrator, Lesley Vamos, did a gorgeous job of bringing Charlie and his intriguing story to life. Here's a sneak peak...

Charlie has no money, but at The Anything Shop it doesn't matter. He can SWAp things he doesn't want. Charlie swaps two years of embarrassing hugs for a cricket bat that hits six runs every time.
But things go wrong at school and Charlie soon misses all those hugs from his family. Can he swap them back? And what's really going on at that weird looking shop?
Charlie and his new friend Sam snoop around and discover something very sinister about the owners, Meryl and Alfred. What do they want with things like children's hugs and laughter and tickles anyway?

Discovering the child within - Writing for children, no matter your age!

I met a lovely bunch of people today - The Blue Mountains Regional Fellowship of Australian Writers. With a generous sprinkling of senior citizens and some younger ring-ins we had a fun workshop on writing for children that got everyone involved. I shared the joys, the pitfalls, the weird stuff, the rejections, the opportunities, the networking and the obsessive compulsion that is writing. Then my 'class' participated in a writing task with sometimes hilarious and fascinating results! Thanks guys, for inviting me!

Getting Noticed - the power of writers' networks

Since making a sincere effort to come out of my writer's cave a few years ago to socialise, mingle, chat with other writers I have been astonished by two things. Firstly, that writers are the most generous and caring people on the planet! They selflessly share opportunities with each other, even though it may mean they are competing with you for it. Amazing! Secondly I've noticed that opportunities seem to come my way once I stick my little hand up and tell people what I'm doing, what I'm interested in and what I'm looking for. Someone will remember.

Joe Delaney SPOOKS author

I had the delight of meeting English children's author Joe Delany last Saturday. Such an engaging and energetic man! Joe's books started out telling the story of Apprentice Spook Thomas Ward and his adventures keeping The County safe from evil spectres, witches, goblins and fearful beasts. The books are phenomenally successful, with a film in the wings. Joe is contracted to write ten books for Random House and is currently writing two a year! Joe lives in Lancashire in the north of England and was an English Teacher before being able to make a living from writing and give up class work. Writing Workshops for kids

What a fantastic day! This morning I had a gorgeous group of budding writers at Tuggeranong Library, then this afternoon it was another group of fabulous kids at Gungahlin Library. We had lots of laughs, some amazing ideas zinged around the room and it was so inspiring to see young minds excited about writing down their thoughts. Even those who found the physical act of hand writing had a go and were pleased with what they could achieve in under an hour. Thanks to all the wonderful librarians who organised rooms and materials. You made me feel very welcome!

Had the most amazing Book Feast ever this year with hundreds of little dynamos cheering the authors and illustrators who attended. Convener, Michael Fraser, gave each author/ilustrator a creative 'nickname' as they stood in the doorway to the auditorium to be introduced to the kids. Mine was "Dawn Dragon Breath Meredith"!!! Over 40 authors and illustrators sat with groups of kids from various Sydney schools.There were wonderful, entertaining talks by authors, which had the kids rolling on the floor with laughter. A delicious lunch was served. Kids could buy books at the bookshop and wander around to each author for their autograph. A great day was had by all!

Megan Hammond - Asperger's talk

I went to the most amazing talk about Asperger's Syndrome tonight! Megan Hammond suffered at the hands of school bullies and well meaning people who thought she was a) retarded, b) possessed by the devil, c) brain damaged when in fact, she was an intelligent girl with a social disorder who remained undiagnosed until the age of 26. Despite her family's determined attempts to discover what exactly it was their daughter struggled with, Megan remained an anomaly for her entire childhood and well into her adult life. Then, finally, an answer was provided and so much became clear!

I have known Megs since she was 4. At the time she was just learning to speak and was clearly frustrated by her attempts to communicate with others. Megs has always been a loving and gentle person, and I was very proud of her tonight as she spoke to mums and dads and interested parties who struggle to understand how a child with Asperger's sees the world. As Megs says, it's like being thrown out of a plane and landng in a foreign country, where you don't know the language or customs. Megs bravely shared her life story tonight and it was professional, moving and funny. With honesty and charming humour, Megan gave us all an invaluable insight that was quite humbling. But above all she showed just what a person with Asperger's can achieve with support, love and determination.

Had a fantastic time today at the Children's Book Council of Australia literary luncheon. Authors and illustrators were hosted a nice lunch while students chatted, asked questions, listened carefully at times, squealed with excitement at other times, giggled and raced around collecting autographs. After signing a 100 or so my hand was a bit shaky! Authors included myself, Richard Harland, Sandy Fussell, Aleesah Darlison, Mo Johnson, Di Bates, Suzanne Gervay, Sue Walker, Mary Small, Bill Condon, Oliver Phommovanh, Kim Miller, Deb Abela and Lisa Shanahan. Illustrators were Bruce Whatley, David Legge and Annabelle Josse. We all got two minutes, (yes, two!) to pitch our latest book or series, being judiciously gonged by the the fabulously punctual Di Bates.

A great time was had by all and I look forward to doing it again!

The Enterprise steam paddle boat

In the age of steam power, hungry beaties like this furnace onboard the "Enterprise" steam paddle boat (now on Lake Burley Girffin in Canberra) had to be fed coal constantly, the pressure monitored carefully to avoid an explosion. It's an art form, controlling the amount of steam produced, so that the skipper can maneouvre the ship and adjust the speed.

These days you can go onboard restored steam vessels, such as the elegant "Lady Hopetoun" and the "James Craig", moored at Rozelle in Sydney. Part of the Sydney Heritage Fleet, these vessels were restored to their former glory, entirely by volunteers. You can see their fleet here: Sydney Heritage Fleet website

There's also the ""Earnslaw" which ferries passengers up and down the magnificent fjord in Queenstown New Zealand.

Have just finshed Gabrielle Lord's fifth book (May) in the C0nspiracy 365 series by Scholastic Australia. The clever plot drives on relentlessly, carrying poor Cal Ormond through more horrors and adventure. Whom can he trust, but his best buddy Boges? In book five his enemies have managed to get him committed to an asylum, from which he tries to escape, however the false identity they have created keeps him locked in therapy wth the dubiously intelligent Dr Snudgeglasser.

Finally, Cal manages an ingenious escape and flees to his Great Uncle Bartholomew. At last, a member of his family believes his story! But his joy is shortlived as Bartholomew figures out how Cal's enemies always know where to find him. For Cal, the reunion with his Great Uncle provides more clues to the Ormond Singularity, the secret his dying father tried to convey to his son on his deathbed. Cal is desperately homesick for his mother and little sister Gabby, but he can't go home. Despite his best efforts, Oriana De La Force's thugs have found him again and he must leave Bartholomew and flee in the little Orca airplane in the shed. Yes, that's right - fly a plane! Just when you think Cal is getting somewhere, his story twists again and he finds himself in more danger.

So far, Gabrielle Lord has kept up the suspense and drama for five books. Some of my students, notably boys, have caught the Consppiracy 365 bug and can't wait for the next instalment!

What inspires writers?
Having been sick with pneumonia for over a week, I have been in the unusual position of being inspired to write, with ideas flooding in from all directions, but too tired to do anything about it!
One thing I make time for each day is a daily journal entry or thought for the day. It keeps the windows open.

I really enjoyed this book about Fat Abby.

I liked when Abby's friend Molly goes missing and Abby tries to find her, she comes across the mean and vicious Fang.

Then Abby tries to think of a plan to fight Fang and thought of a great idea to attack Fang's wounds, then Fang limps away,hurt.

A short time later,Abby finds Molly,she is pregnant and she needs a safe place to have her babies.When Abby and Molly get back home Molly's babies are ready to come out.There is one boy and three girls.Abby's friend Manky was at the vet because he was hurt by Fang.In the end Helen,Abby's mother and Molly have to care for four cubs that are very cute.

This book is very adventurous and exciting.I rate this book very high,I give it a 10 out of 10.

Here are some pics of The Enterprise, a steam powered paddle boat built in the 1800's. Unfortunately it is not in survey, so it can't take public passengers on a cruise, but the volunteers take good care of it, opening it for the public to come onboard and have a look at how boats were powered in the age of steam. A very tasty, aromatic lunch was cooked on this old stove!

When my friend Lesley said, "I'm taking you out for coffe to somewhere a bit different," I had no idea she meant here! I've seen some pretty cool stuff here in the Canberra district, not least is the deep space satellites at Tidbinbilla, the actual site, (not Parkes), that was used to see the astronauts land on the moon.

Had a very pleasant chat with the ACT Speculative Fiction Guild the other night. Great people. Lots of fun! They are gearing up to have a presence at Worldcon, the Science Fiction and Fantasy convention 2010. I burbled about how I've moved from non-fiction to fiction as an author and fielded questions about writing in general, rejections from publishers, contracts etc. Thanks, guys, for the lovely bottle of red!

Writing workshops at Yass Public School

Crazy hats, flying cards, furious writing, embarrassing questions and lots of giggles. No, it's not the circus, but my writing workshops and author talks at Yass Public School! In the first mad session we had over 60 children in years 3 & 4. They wrote some fantastic story outlines and voted the best seven to receive prizes. In the second session we had about 40 children in years 5 & 6. They also had a great writing session and asked very intelligent and interesting questions.

It was great fun! Thanks to the Principal, the kids and teachers for a warm welcome and to the wonderful Lesley for keeping me organised!

Redbrow Garden - Fantastic Writer's Retreat

WELL! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be here, at Redbrow Garden, situated 25mins from Canberra. As 20 acres of cultivated beauty, few places could beat it as a retreat. The stream-fed lake is brimming with bird life, including a visiting black swan, small birdies dart in amongst the abundant plantings of shrub and flowering bushes and the deciduous autumn finery is magnificent. My mobile phone pics don't do it justice! I feel the calm seeping in through my pores... Other guests come and go but I am so lucky to be able to stay here for an extended period. Suna and Phillip, the managers, are wonderful hosts. It's like a home away from home. I find myself jotting things down at all hours - a good sign that the creative river is flowing again.

"I Am Jack" author at Tuggeranong Library

What an inspirational speaker Suzanne Gervay is! I was as spellbound as the kids as she talked about bullying and shared the story of how her own son was bullied at school, without her even knowing it. One little boy really identified with Jack (the character in Suzanne's book "I Am Jack") and made us all cry when he said he felt like dying. We had a lovely time at the Tuggeragong Library in the ACT and were made to feel very welcome. What a fabulous place!

Belle Alderman & The Lu Rees Archives, Canberra

Visited the Lu Rees Archives in Canberra this morning. Met the lovely Prof. Belle Alderman. The archives were started by Mrs Lu Rees in the 1970's in her garage. Her mission was to create a collection of Australian children's authors and illustrators - their work, notes and biographical details. There are now over 20,000 books in the collection. All details pertaining to the authors/illustrators are being catalogued. I got a private tour of the archives and was astonished at the work and dedication that has gone into amassing this huge collection of precious works. You can tap into the collection through an online search. The archives gladly receives donations of books and is always looking for creative fundraising ideas. This morning I donated copies of two of my own books - "The Wobbly Wombat" and "Fat Abby - Feline Investigator" which are now in the collection. Woo hoo!

May Gibbs Fellowship

Well, here I am, after my first week in Canberra as a May Gibbs Trust Fellow and I'm loving it! The apartment is great. There is plenty of privacy and the location is central to everything. I can walk to all the major shops and its a five minute drive to Lake Burley Griffin. My favourite place so far. Another good spot is Gloria Jean's in the Borders book store in the Canberra Centre. It's wonderful to sit back with a latte and read and look at all the different types of people doing the same!
I'm very grateful for this fantastic opportunity and recommend other writers apply!

Am now in the lovely city of Canberra. So wonderful to walk by Lake Burley Griffin. There are mass plantings of trees everywhere here. Tree lined streets keep the city cooler and add a touch of olde world charm. I love it.

Gabrielle Lord's CONSPIRACY 365 series

Have just finished reading the first four books in this amazing series by Gabrielle Lord, reviewing them for ezine 'BUZZWORDS'. I couldn't put them down! I read them all in a week, one per night. They are the brain child of Andrew Berkhut at Scholastic, who wanted to excite YA readers with a thriller series.

What an amazing achievement for an author, to come up with not just one thrilling YA novel, but TWELVE, to be released one each month of 2010. I am stunned by the commitment of Scholastic too. The plot is impressive and Lord has kept up the tension so far in the first four books.

Young Cal Ormond becomes entangled in the mystery of his father's death when a man staggers down his street and clutches him, delivering a message that is both weird and disturbing. Cal is going to be hunted down, unless he can stay alive for the next 365 days. Accused of assualting his little sister and putting her in a coma, Cal is on the run, hiding wherever he can find a temporary place to lay his head - in tunnels, disused houses, railway yards etc. Without the help of his best friend, Boges, he would be dead already. Powerful people want what he wants - to solve the Ormond Riddle and cash in on the biggest prize imaginable.

If you have a young guy in your household or a class of young guys who are reluctant readers, then this is the series to get them hooked! I can't wait to read May's edition.

ASPERGERS AWARENESS

This week marks World Autism Day, on April 2nd and it's perfect timing for debut author and Aspergers sufferer Megan Hammond. Megan has spent most of her life bewildered by the world, including her parents. At the age of 26 she was at last diagnosed with Aspergers, which helped explain a lot about her social awkwardness. Read this fascinating, sometimes disturbing account of what it was like to be Megan. She does herself and her family proud. The Hughenden Bunch

I love the writing community - there is sooo much support! I am constantly amazed at the generosity of established writers. In four weeks I shall be in Canberra and meeting the writing community there whilst I am making the most of the month long retreat courtesy of the May Gibbs Children's Trust. I'll be doing workshops at schools too. Can't wait to have fun with the kids in years 3-6!

It's a new week. Monday - yay! My fave day of the week. All the possibilities are still out there, ready to be discovered. I have been working on my latest manuscript but also on anything else that pops into my head. I guess that's called going with the flow. As long as I'm putting something down each day, I am working towards my goals.

Canberra

Well, it's only five and a bit weeks until I begin my four week writer's retreat in Canberra, thanks to the generosity of the May Gibbs Trust Fellowship I received. Four weeks in a gorgeous serviced apartment - how plush! I'm hoping to get lots of work done, being away from all domestic distractions, but hey, if friends just happen to be in the area I'll be happy to have a cuppa!

I have til the end of my Canberra stay to finish the first draft of my latest book, so I'm doing quite a bit now so that I don't feel the pressure when I'm there in Canberra. Its a fantastic opportunity for me to connect with the Canberra writing comunity while I am there, so I am looking forward to that. Yay!

Writers' Network
What an energised writers' network today! Despite my protestations of 'cautiously optimistic' etc I was warmly congratulated on my latest project, for which Scholastic Australia have shown great interest, commissioning me to extend my 10,000 word manuscript into 20,000 plus. Among participants to day were convener, Susanne Gervay, writers Laurine Croasdale, Patricia Heaton, David Mulligan, Deb Abela and Zara Penny. The feedback and animated discussions today made it one of the best yet. It was heartening for all of us to hear stories of positive reactions by publishers, overseas as well as Australian. Happy writing!
